Age UK North East
£20,000 (2011/2012) for a one-year pilot involving the participation of the Older People’s Engagement Network.
The focus of the project was the local authority’s Older People’s Strategy and other local Strategies. Three priorities were selected, which coincided with key issues identified in Age UK’s National Campaign plan for 2011-2012: that older people are actively involved in the borough and respected for their contribution to community life; that older people remain healthy and independent for as long as possible with a good sense of well-being; that older people have equal economic and personal development opportunities. Data, materials, policy information and press releases provided by Age UK helped Age UK North Tyneside to coordinate its programme with the national campaign. The grant from Millfield House Foundation enabled Age UK North Tyneside to:
- engage with more older people (via pavement cafés, etc.) giving them a voice on issues which effect their day to day lives, (such as transport and the cut backs in bus routes)
- support health improvements via the Falls Clinic which improves mobility for people who are vulnerable to falls or have no confidence after a fall
- actively encourage North Tyneside residents to have a benefit interview with Age UK North Tyneside’s Information and Advice Team leading to the release of over £1million in unclaimed benefits for customers of North Tyneside.
